The GST Council meeting: The 56th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will be held in Delhi on September 3 and 4, 2025. The meeting will start from 11an in the morning. A meeting of officials has been scheduled for September 2 before the meeting. An agenda will be prepared. Representatives of States and Union Territories have been invited to join it.
The meeting comes just ahead of the festive season. The central government wants the benefits of GST rate cuts to reach consumers before Dussehra and Diwali. In such a situation, a big decision can be taken on tax slabs in the meeting. Several suggestions were made at the Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting on August 21. In this four slabs, instead of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, there will be only two slabs 5% and 18%. With this, the Centre has suggested a separate rate of 40 per cent for "sin goods" and "ultra luxury items." Many states have objected to this. He said that the reduction in tax rates will have an impact on revenue. Therefore, the states have demanded the Centre to assess the possible losses and provide compensation.
If the tax slabs are reduced, the tax on many products and services will be reduced. This will benefit the common man. When shopping increases in the market during festivals like Dussehra and Diwali, the prices will be reduced at that time, which will reduce the expenses of consumers and also increase demand. Many important decisions were taken in the last meeting of the GST Council. Return filing has been made easier for small businesses. The MSME sector has been hit. Taxes on some food products have been reduced. Compensation funds were also released to the states. If a consensus is reached on tax slabs in this meeting. This will be the biggest change so far. This will simplify the GST system. However, the issue of compensation will also be important in view of the revenue loss of the states.
