Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that three major decisions have been taken in the cabinet today. One of them is related to the census. Reference for the census is scheduled for 1 March 2027 at 00:00. The survey will be conducted in two phases: The first phase will run from April to September 2026, while the second phase will be completed in February 2027. Along with this, the government has also approved the Coal Setu Scheme. Ashwini Vaishnaw has made a big announcement in this regard.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Census 2027 will be the first digital census of the country. The Union Cabinet has approved a budget of ₹11,718 crore for this. An important change in this upcoming census is that it will also include caste-based enumeration. Regarding the cabinet decisions, Minister Vaishnaw also mentioned the growing domestic production capacity of the country. He informed that due to increase in domestic production, the country is saving foreign exchange (forex) of about ₹60,000 crore. This shows the positive outcome of the economic decisions taken by the government.
The census will be carried out by about 30 lakh field workers, who will carry out this campaign of national importance. A mobile app will be used to collect the data, which will run on both Android and iOS. Also, there will be a central portal for monitoring, which will improve the quality of data. The data will be made available to the users in one click. Through Census-as-a-Service (CaaS), ministries will get clean, digital and useful data. A gazette notification will come regarding the census in which complete information will be given about the cost etc. Up-to-date and micro-level data will be available for policy formulation and administrative needs. Separate forms will be filled for house-listing and population enumeration by visiting every house. Government teachers appointed by the state governments will usually do the counting. Apart from this, officers will also be deployed at sub-district, district and state levels.
