The government has expressed concern about the misinformation circulating on social media. Don't panic! The country has a 60-day stockpile of crude oil.
The Ministry has expressed serious concern over the spread of misleading news and videos on social media. In many posts, pictures and news from other countries are being misrepresented by linking them to India, which is creating an atmosphere of fear. The government has made it clear that spreading false information is a crime under the law and strict action will be taken in such cases. Citizens have been appealed to seek information only from official sources and not pay heed to rumours.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the supply situation of petroleum and LPG in India is completely safe and under control. Sufficient quantity of fuel is available at all retail fuel outlets across the country. There is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG anywhere. The government says that India has a stock of crude oil for the next 60 days. The Ministry has appealed to the citizens not to fall prey to the misinformation being spread in a well-planned and highly perfunctory manner, which is aimed at creating unnecessary panic.
The ministry said that more than 1 lakh petrol pumps across the country are open without any interruption and rationing has not been implemented anywhere. Incidents of panic buying of fuel were reported in some places, but these were the effect of misleading news spread on social media. Despite this, the oil companies maintained supply and the depots continued to function. Also, the credit given to petrol pumps has been increased from 1 day to 3 days, so that there is no supply disruption. Despite the conditions associated with the Strait of Hormuz, India continues to receive crude oil from more than 41 countries. Additional supplies from the international market, especially from Western countries, have perfectly balanced any potential shortfall. All refineries are operating at more than 100% capacity and next 60 days supply is assured in advance. The claim that there is only 6 days stock in the country is completely false and misleading. India has a total storage capacity of 74 days, while the actual stock available at present is about 60 days. Despite the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, almost two months of fuel supply in the country is secure, so the fear of any shortage is unfounded.
The situation with regard to LPG is also completely normal. After the government steps, the domestic production has increased by 40% and now 50 TMT of LPG is being produced daily, while the total requirement is about 80 TMT. This has reduced the import requirement to 30 TMT. In addition, a consignment of 800 TMT LPG from countries like USA, Russia and Australia has already been scheduled. Deliveries are continuing through the country's 22 import terminals. Oil companies are delivering more than 50 lakh cylinders every day and the demand is now back to normal levels.
