The NDA government will amend the law brought for reservation of women in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies! The number of Lok Sabha members will increase from 545 to 816!

This will address the grievance of south Indian parties like the TDP and the DMK that states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will benefit from higher population growth. South Indian states have been arguing that they have shown better results in population control and should not be penalised for it. It is being told that the Delimitation Commission can be formed in June this year.

The NDA government will amend the law brought for reservation of women in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies! The number of Lok Sabha members will increase from 545 to 816!

The government is planning to introduce a bill in Parliament to provide reservation to women in Parliament and state legislatures. The amendment proposes to increase the number of women MPs to one-third. The bill is expected to be introduced in this session of the parliament. This will increase the strength of the Lok Sabha to 816. At the same time, the number of seats reserved for women MPs will increase to 273. Sources said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with leaders of several parties in Parliament on Monday regarding the amendment to this law. He held meetings with leaders of NCP (SP) BJD, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) YSR Congress. However, no meeting has been held with the Congress and the TMC so far. Efforts are being made to build consensus in the amended law so that this bill is passed without any hindrance.
The central government had passed the 'Nari Shakti Vandana Act' for women's reservation in 2023. The bill provides for 33% reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha as well as in the state legislative assemblies.
After almost three years, the government is going to amend this law. With this, the number of MPs in the Lok Sabha will go up to 816 and the number of women MPs to 273. It is being told that the 2011 census can be made the basis for determining the seats. It is being told that the delimitation of seats will be done on the basis of 2011 census. Lok Sabha and assembly seats in all states will be increased by 50 per cent. This increase can be proportionate. For example, Uttar Pradesh has 120 seats instead of 80, Bihar has 60 seats instead of 40, Tamil Nadu has 58 or 59 seats instead of 39. By increasing the number of seats, 33 per cent seats will be reserved for women.
