After EC Arun Goel’s Surprise Resignation, Govt May Hold Selection Panel Meet This Week
The government could hold a selection committee meeting soon, as early as in the coming week, for selection of an Election Commissioner (EC) in the Election Commission of India (ECI). Arun Goel resigned as the Election Commissioner (EC) in a surprise move on Saturday amid the vacancy after Anup Pandey’s retirement as an EC last month. Goel was scheduled to leave for Jammu and Kashmir on March 12 for a review visit. The ECI is to take a call on whether the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections should be held simultaneously in J&K, given the Supreme Court’s deadline of September 30 to hold assembly elections in the Valley. Goel had gone to West Bengal, too, for a review earlier this week, but intriguingly skipped attending the customary press conference four days ago in Kolkata after completion of the visit. Only Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar did the press briefing with an announcement that Goel was not there due to “health" reasons.
