Obesity is on the rise in Delhi-NCR! Nearly eight out of every 10 people are overweight or obese. Nearly half have prediabetes or diabetes.
Based on the health check-up of about five lakh working people, it was found that about eight out of 10 people are overweight or obese. About half of all people have prediabetes, and one out of every four has high blood pressure. "Poor diet, lack of physical activity and a high-stress urban lifestyle are leading to a silent rise in obesity and related diseases like diabetes and hypertension," said Dr Rakesh Gupta, a senior physician. What is worrying is that many of these conditions are now being found at a young age.
Delhi-NCR is witnessing an alarming rise in lifestyle diseases and 17 per cent of those who underwent preventive check-ups were found to be diabetic, 19 per cent hypertensive, 23 per cent anaemic and 81 per cent obese. This was revealed by a report from a private hospital. According to the report, the findings make it clear that specific plans need to be put in place to tackle rising health problems and more robust action needs to be taken at the community level. The data is part of a nationwide health assessment conducted by Apollo Hospitals, which analysed preventive check-ups in several cities. The analysis is based on more than 30 lakh preventive health check-up participants across the country. This report shows that metabolic diseases are gradually increasing due to the urban lifestyle, but people do not know it soon. Data from Delhi-NCR shows that obesity is increasing very fast. Obesity is a leading cause of diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
The problem with these diseases is that they are often not detected in the beginning. At the national level, the report highlights similar concerns, especially among young people. It found that out of a group of nearly one lakh individuals, more than half of those under the age of 30 were overweight, while many were found to have abnormal cholesterol levels and vitamin deficiencies, indicating early onset of lifestyle conditions.
