The Supreme Court is not in favour of a complete ban on firecrackers in Delhi, why not take the help of popular sportspersons like Virat Kohli and other celebrities?

New Delhi. New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the rising air pollution in Delhi-NCR and the use of firecrackers during Diwali. The court said it was not in favour of a complete ban on firecrackers. Festivals are associated with people's sentiments and the court's aim is not to hurt anyone's sentiments, but to ensure control over pollution. The court made it clear that for this it is very important to follow the rules strictly.

Take help of famous faces like Virat Kohli.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the Delhi government as to why the help of popular sportspersons like Virat Kohli and other celebrities is not taken to make people aware against pollution. The court is of the view that mere imposition of restrictions will not immediately change the habits of the people. For this, along with the continuous awareness campaign, the rules will also have to be followed effectively.

The court stressed on taking concrete steps in this direction keeping in mind the problems caused by pollution to children, the elderly and people with disabilities. At the same time, special caution needs to be exercised for two days during Diwali.

The Delhi government is taking all steps to control pollution.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Delhi government, informed the court about the steps taken to tackle pollution. According to the government, arrangements have been made to ban the entry of vehicles below BS-VI standard coming from outside Delhi.

The timings of government offices have been changed to reduce traffic pressure. Anti-smog guns have been installed to control dust around construction sites. The government told the court that 608 anti-smog guns have been installed in Delhi. Apart from this, annual action plans and control centres are also working for pollution control.

Festivals, and clean air. Pollution control strategy

It is clear from the observations of the Supreme Court that mere imposition of restrictions is not enough to tackle the problem of pollution. Public awareness, administrative oversight and strict enforcement of rules are equally important.

The authorities will have to keep a special vigil to control pollution caused by the use of firecrackers during Diwali. The challenge now is to effectively implement pollution control measures on the ground while striking a balance between the joy of the festival and the health of the people.
