The former governor of Canada's central bank and the Bank of England narrowly defeated three rivals in a Liberal Party leadership contest on Sunday. Carney has not yet served in any elected office.
Carney will be sworn in as prime minister in the coming days and will lead the Liberal Party into the next general election.
