Then he handed over the command of Haryana to his son Om Prakash Chautala. He became a Rajya Sabha member in 1998 and died in 2001 while being a Rajya Sabha MP. In the Haryana Assembly elections, BJP became the largest party by winning 48 seats and Congress again came into opposition with 37 seats.
