India's population is moving towards old age! The country's fertility rate has decreased from 5.2 in 1971 to just 1.9 in 2023
while the lowest is recorded in Bihar (60.1 per cent). It is 68.8 per cent in urban areas and 64.6 per cent in rural areas. The SRS report pointed out that India has the highest share of rural women in Jammu and Kashmir, and urban men in Assam in the working age group. There has also been an increase in the elderly population in the country. People aged 60 years and above have increased to 9.7 per cent in 2023. Kerala (15.1 per cent), Tamil Nadu (14 per cent) and Himachal Pradesh (13.2 per cent) are the leaders in this category.

India's population is ageing at a fast pace. A 2023 report of the Sample Registration System (SRS) has made a shocking revelation. The SRS report also states that the fertility rate in India is decreasing. According to the report, the proportion of population in the working age group (15-59 years) is increasing in India. However, the population in the age group of 0-14 is witnessing a steady decline. According to the report released by the Sample Registration System, the share of the 0-14 age group had declined from 41.2 per cent to 38.1 per cent between 1971 and 1981, while the figure dropped from 36.3 per cent to 24.2 per cent between 1991 and 2023. The SRS data released by the Registrar General of India has revealed that the total fertility rate of the country has declined from 5.2 in 1971 to 1.9 in 2023 in the same period. A sample population of about 88 lakh has been included in the preparation of this report by SRS. It is one of the largest demographic surveys in the world. The report also found that boys outnumber girls in the 0-14 age group in all states and union territories of India. Delhi's rural areas are the exception where the proportion of girls is higher.
