Has Rahul Gandhi finally resigned as Congress president? Protest outside Delhi Police HQ over pellet case
At this point, the big question is... Has Rahul Gandhi's sit-in outside the police station put so much pressure on the Delhi Police and the government that it will now open the way for an FIR and action in the pellet gun case? Rahul's move is being seen in political circles as one of the most aggressive protests by the opposition against the government and the Delhi Police. However, no FIR had been registered till the filing of the report.
New Delhi: The political slugfest over the alleged use of pellet guns in Delhi intensified on Friday when Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi reached Parliament Street police station along with injured student Sahil Lochab. Rahul Gandhi met the police officials and demanded an FIR and action in the matter.
The case pertains to a student protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20. Sahil Lochab alleged that he was hit by a pellet during the protest. The Congress says that despite the complaint, no FIR has been registered so far. Rahul Gandhi first met the police officials and later sat on a dharna outside the police station over the issue.
Congress leaders and workers gathered outside the Parliament Street police station after Rahul Gandhi's dharna. Senior party leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were present on the occasion. The protesters raised slogans against the police and demanded immediate action in the case.
'Reply, file FIR ": Rahul's direct pressure
Rahul Gandhi's stand has been clear that he is not going to back down till legal action is taken on the complaint of the injured student. He also sought to know from the police as to who was responsible for the alleged pellet firing and why no action was taken.
The Delhi Police, however, cited investigation and legal process in the matter. While the police have been denying the use of pellet guns earlier, the medical reports of the injured protesters and the ongoing investigation have made the issue more serious. A high-level committee has also been formed to investigate the matter.
BJP accuses Congress of 'vindictive politics'
BJP has attacked Rahul Gandhi for criticising the government. Calling it "anarchic politics," BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned whether the opposition leaders respect the law and rules. The BJP also alleged that the Congress was trying to divert attention from the current political controversy through the protest.
The Congress, however, said it was not a case of a political stunt but a fight to ensure justice to the injured student and accountability for the police action.
At this point, the big question is... Has Rahul Gandhi's sit-in outside the police station put so much pressure on the Delhi Police and the government that it will now open the way for an FIR and action in the pellet gun case?
