The visit assumes significance as the Chinese President will be visiting India after a gap of nearly seven years. Xi's last visit to India was in October 2019, when he attended the second informal India-China summit with Prime Minister Modi in Tamil Nadu's Mamallapuram.

He will be in Delhi for about 24 hours.

According to sources, Xi Jinping is likely to arrive in Delhi at around 12 noon on September 12. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit. He will then attend the BRICS summit. He is likely to leave for China around noon on September 13.

The meeting will also be closely watched as India-China relations have been strained over the past few years due to border disputes and military tensions. BRICS is no longer just an economic platform. It has become an influential geopolitical grouping spread across four continents. At present, there are 11 member countries - Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

The collective strength of these countries represents about 49.5 per cent of the world's population, 40 per cent of global GDP and 26 per cent of global trade.
