LOKSBHA ELECTION 2024 - This Katchatheevu Island issue should not become a sticking point for BJP in Tamil Nadu.
The government has not taken it up officially even with the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi even as India is keen to explore a free trade agreement with the island nation.

INS NEWS - Katchatheevu Island: The Government of India has no plans to raise the issue of Katchatheevu Island with Sri Lanka through official channels even as the matter has become a hot potato in the upcoming general elections. New Delhi has no intention to either reopen the 1974 Agreement or take up the matter with Colombo even though the issue has currently spiralled out of control in Tamil Nadu’s election season,
Though leaders of the ruling BJP have made it a poll issue to vehemently attack the Congress and its political allies just days before the parliamentary elections, New Delhi has “neither the time nor the intention” to raise the issue formally with Sri Lanka, top-level sources told INS INDIAN NEWS SERVICE.
The sources also said the Narendra Modi government has informally told Colombo through back-channel talks that New Delhi will rake up the issue for domestic political reasons and that New Delhi will never ask Colombo to reopen the 1974 agreement or give the island back to India. While New Delhi and Colombo hold regular discussions on the issue of Indian fishermen being detained by Sri Lankan authorities and those will continue, there will be no move taken to retrieve the Katchatheevu island back from them. The government has not taken it up officially even with the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi even as India is keen to explore a free trade agreement with the island nation.
