Nepal heading towards a "failed state" amid questions of power and conspiracy?

Unrest in Nepal: From Bhainsepati to Nakhu Jail, Kathmandu. There was a sudden political earthquake in Bhainsepati, an area adjacent to Nepal's capital, on Tuesday afternoon. The complex, which houses the chambers of ministers and top officials, was engulfed in flames. At first, the residence of Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung was targeted, then the surrounding houses also started arson and vandalism. As the situation deteriorated, the Nepal Army had to evacuate the ministers and their families by helicopters.

Meanwhile, in another dramatic development, Gen-Z protesters stormed Nakhu jail and freed former minister and journalist Rabi Lamichhane. The incident is not only indicative of the growing unrest in Nepal but also of the continuing adventurism of the Gen-Z protesters.

Amid the violence and rebellion on the streets of Nepal, the question is whether President Ram Chandra Poudel and Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel will now be forced to take over the reins of the country.
America's intelligence agency CIA is at the center of discussions in India, although American projects are going on in a normal way in Nepal. At the same time, doubts are also being raised about KP Sharma Oli's recent visit to China.

Nepal towards' Failed State '?
Analysts believe that the situation in Nepal is gradually touching the definition of 'Failed State'. In 2022, due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the way the public stormed the President's House, the situation suddenly emerged in Nepal with the power of social media. No one could have imagined that platforms like Facebook, TikTok and Telegram would drive the masses to the streets.

Social Media and Political Duplicity Interestingly, the leaders who once opposed the ban on social media later became the ones who imposed the ban.
On 13 November 2023, Prime Minister Prachanda banned TikTok citing social harmony.
The ban was lifted as soon as TikTok was registered in August 2024.
In July 2024, Telegram was banned due to allegations of fraud and money laundering.
Earlier, the Oli government (2018-2021) had initiated an exercise to control social networks. In December 2020, advocates B.P. Gautam and Anita Bajgain had filed a petition seeking a ban on foreign advertisements and unrestricted broadcasting. Manoj Gurung, general secretary of Nepal Cable Television Federation, also demanded control over social media.

Writer Khagendra Sangraula says: "The Supreme Court only talked about regulating social media and making it responsible, but the Oli government found a way to suppress dissent under the pretext of nationalism. "
