The Gen-Z movement started by the ban on social media platforms in Nepal will be so strong, KP Sharma Oli would never have thought. The Gen-Z movement was so fierce that 23 people died in it. Several ministers and the former prime minister's house were attacked by the protesters. The buildings associated with the Supreme Court and the cabinet were seen burning in smoke.
After this movement, first the Home Minister resigned and the situation did not improve, then the resignations of each of the ministers came and finally Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned. President Ram Chandra Poudel has resigned from the post following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The Gen-Z movement, which began in Nepal on Monday (September 8, 2025), intensified on September 9. The protesters attacked the private residences of several top political leaders, including President Ram Chandra Poudel, and vandalized the parliament building. The protesters gathered in Kathmandu and other places despite curfew and heavy deployment of security forces. Demanding Oli's resignation, hundreds of protesters barged into his office and started sloganeering, following which he immediately asked the PM to step down. In his resignation letter to President Poudel, Oli cited the current situation in Nepal and said he was stepping down to find a constitutional and political solution to the current situation. Hours before Oli's resignation, protesters set fire to his private residence in Balkot and attacked the residences of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. Most of the protesters were students. In Kalanki, protesters burnt tyres to block roads. According to eyewitnesses, the protesting youths also pelted stones at the residence of Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung at Sunakothi in Lalitpur district. Gurung had ordered a ban on the social media platform. The main demands of the protesters include the resignation of Prime Minister Oli, formation of a national government and stern action against corrupt leaders. Earlier, senior Nepali Congress leaders Bimalendra Nidhi and Arjun Narsingh KC have suggested that the party recall all its ministers from the Oli-led government, form a government on its own and start talks with the agitating Gen-Z group. Earlier, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Health Minister Pradeep Poudel resigned from their posts.
