New Delhi, 31 July 2026: A Karkardooma court on Friday sentenced five convicts, including former councillor Tahir Hussain, to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi riots.
In sentencing, the court described the killing as a "very serious, cold-blooded and socially shocking crime." The court said the brutality with which the victim was killed was more horrific than normal criminal incidents. According to the court, Ankit Sharma's body was also treated inhumanely and was dragged and thrown into a drain in Chand Bagh.
The court observed that the manner in which the crime was committed was extremely brutal.
The treatment meted out to the body after the murder also shows the seriousness of the crime.

The Delhi Police had demanded his arrest.
During the hearing, the Delhi Police and the victim's family had sought death penalty for all the convicts. Terming the incident as "rarest of rare," the police said Ankit Sharma was brutally assaulted.
According to the police:
Ankit Sharma had 51 injury marks on his body.
Of them, 7 suffered serious injuries.
16 wounds were inflicted with sharp weapons.
His body was mutilated even after his death.

On July 13, 2026, the Karkardooma court had convicted Tahir Hussain, Nazim, Qasim, Anas and Javed of murder and other charges. Security had been tightened in and around the court complex ahead of the verdict.

During the arguments on the quantum of sentence, Tahir Hussain's counsel opposed the demand for capital punishment and told the court that a case cannot be treated as punishable on the basis of the number of wounds on the body alone. The defence also argued that Tahir Hussain had himself called the police during the incident.
Finally, after considering all the circumstances and arguments of the parties, the court sentenced the convicts to life imprisonment.
