Trump made the request in a video conference with several officials, including EU sanctions official David O'Sullivan. EU officials told the agency that the United States has indicated it intends to impose similar tariffs if the request is granted. Significantly, Trump himself has been complaining that Europe has not distanced itself from Russia in terms of trade. Russia accounted for 19% of the EU's total gas imports last year. However, the EU has said it is committed to completely eliminating energy imports from Russia.
