Flood threat in Delhi! Situation like 1978 may arise

New Delhi: There is panic among the people of Delhi once again. This fear is not of rain, but of the Yamuna river, which is the identity of this city. The water level of the Yamuna river has crossed the danger mark. The water level of the Yamuna is rising due to heavy rains and release of water from Haryana's Hathnikund Barrage, which has led to waterlogging in many areas of Delhi. In such a situation, the raindrops falling from the sky are now creating panic in the hearts of the people, because they remember the scene of the year 2023, when the Yamuna submerged their own city.
Even today, those people's eyes roam the night when up to 8-8 feet of water was filled in the houses. Boats started moving in the streets and things kept inside the houses were floating in the water. People were standing on their rooftops just helplessly watching everything sink in. This year, the water level of Yamuna had reached 208.66 m, which was a record. It was not just a flood, it was a 'Jal Pralay' for Delhi. Delhi had suffered a similar fate in 1978. That year, the Yamuna had broken all its boundaries. The water level had reached 207.49 m on September 5-6, 1978. Areas like Model Town and Mukherjee Nagar were waterlogged. The floods killed 18 people and left thousands homeless.
Today, when once again the water level of the Yamuna is seen going above the danger mark of 205.33 m, the same old fear is prevailing among the people of Delhi. Authorities are advising people to stay safe.
