Love, rape and then marriage in jail! Prisoner and rape victim got married in jail premises

A 26-year-old man, who was lodged in a jail in Odisha's Ganjam district in connection with a rape case, married the victim in the jail premises on Sunday. Officials gave this information. The wedding took place in the jail premises in the presence of the bride and groom's family members, several dignitaries and jail officials. There was a festive atmosphere in the premises of the sub-jail in Kodala. The undertrial, identified as Suryakanta Behera, a resident of Gochhabari under Polasara police station, tied the knot with the woman he was in love with before coming to jail in November last year. Before being arrested, Behera was working in Surat in Gujarat. The bride's lawyer PK Mishra said that due to some misunderstanding between the families of the bride and groom, the 22-year-old woman filed a complaint of rape against Behera, after which he was taken into custody. He said that now they have agreed to the marriage with mutual consent, although the groom is lodged in jail as an undertrial prisoner.
"After getting permission from the jail authorities and following all legal aspects, we organised their marriage ceremony," said Tarinisen Dehury, jailor of the Kodala-based sub-jail. The wedding took place as per traditional Hindu rituals in the presence of the bride and groom's family members and dignitaries, he said. The groom reached the venue in a well-equipped electric vehicle (EV), which was also arranged by the jail authorities.
