Amid objections from opposition members, the Mizoram Assembly passed a bill to ban begging in the state. Introducing the 'Mizoram Prohibition of Beggary Bill, 2025' in the House on Wednesday, state Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii said the objective is not only to curb begging but also to help and rehabilitate beggars by providing them sustainable livelihood options. Expressing concern over the increasing beggary in Mizoram, he said that our state is very fortunate to have very less number of beggars due to its social structure, welfare schemes being implemented in the state with the participation of churches and NGOs. He said that after the opening of Sairang-Sihmui railway station, the possibility of beggars coming to Mizoram from other states will increase.
