President's rule has been lifted in Manipur on Wednesday (February 4, 2025) after almost a year. President's rule has been imposed in the state since February 13, 2025. The 60-member Assembly was suspended following the imposition of President's rule. The term of the Assembly is till 2027. Newly-appointed BJP legislature party leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh reached his residence after staking claim to form the government to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
The meeting was attended by 35 of the BJP's 37 MLAs, party's central observer Tarun Chugh, northeast in-charge Sambit Patra and state BJP president A Sharda Devi. Khemchand Singh was elected as the leader of the legislature party on Tuesday (February 3, 2026). Khemchand Singh is likely to take oath as the chief minister on Wednesday.
The BJP currently has 37 MLAs in Manipur. In the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP had won 32 candidates. The JD (U) had won six seats, of which five MLAs later joined the BJP. Of the other MLAs, six are from the National People's Party (NPP), five from the Naga People's Front (NPF), five from the Congress, two from the Kuki People's Alliance, one from the JD (U) and three independents. Over the past few months, the BJP's central leadership held several rounds of meetings with its Meitei and Kuki MLAs, allies NPF and NPP and some independents to ascertain whether the political situation was conducive for government formation.
