Mamata Banerjee had never imagined that her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), would have to fight for its survival after the debacle in the West Bengal assembly elections. But what is happening in Bengal politics today is being considered as the biggest political crisis in the history of TMC.

In the last few days, there has been such a wave of rebellion within the party that resignations of big leaders and open protests have now become normal events. Most shockingly, the name of Sayani Ghosh, an MP considered close to Mamata Banerjee, is also being mentioned among the MPs who are said to be upset with the party leadership.

A group of around 20 MPs, led by MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, is considering a separate identity in the Lok Sabha and support to the NDA. An open political battle has started between the TMC and the rebel leaders over this claim.

Meanwhile, political turmoil has intensified in West Bengal. Reports of Ritabrata Banerjee being made the Leader of Opposition with the support of the rebel camp, which has been recognised by the Assembly Speaker, have added to the woes of the TMC leadership.

The biggest question now is whether it is just the resentment of disgruntled leaders or is the TMC really heading towards its biggest political split? If this discontent of MPs and MLAs increases further, then the entire equation of Bengal's politics can change.

In the coming days, it will be clear whether Mamata Banerjee is able to pull the party out of this crisis or this internal rebellion of TMC will start a new chapter in Bengal politics.
