Congress leader and former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin becomes Telangana Chief Minister! Congress eyes Jubilee Hills by-election
The by-election was necessitated by the death of Bharatiya Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year. In the last week of August, the Telangana government had nominated Azharuddin as a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) from the Governor's quota. However, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has not yet approved it. Azharuddin had contested the 2023 assembly elections from the Jubilee Hills area, but had faced defeat.
Congress leader and former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin on Friday took oath as a minister in Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's cabinet. In a simple ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath to the former Indian cricket team captain in the presence of several important leaders, including the Chief Minister.
With Azharuddin's induction, the total number of members in the cabinet has gone up to 16, while two more berths are vacant. As per the strength of the Assembly, Telangana can have a maximum of 18 ministers. The induction of the former cricketer into the cabinet is being seen as a significant move as the Congress party is fighting with full force in the Jubilee Hills by-election where over one lakh Muslim voters are expected to play a decisive role. The by-election was necessitated by the death of Bharatiya Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year.
