For the first time in Census 2027, caste will be counted, full socio-economic data of the country will be collected with 40 questions! Questions ranging from Covid vaccination to bank accounts and mobiles

New Delhi: The upcoming Census of India 2027 will no longer be just a population enumeration but will bring out a detailed picture of the social, economic and demographic structure of the country. The central government on Friday notified 40 questions to be asked in the phase of enumeration of people during the census. For the first time, caste-related information will also be recorded.

According to the order issued by Registrar General of India Mrutyunjay Kumar Narayan, people will be asked for important information including their marital status, nationality, religion, SC / ST status, caste, parental information, mother tongue, education, literacy, digital literacy and disability.

There will also be a full description of the caste

The biggest feature of Census 2027 will be that caste details will be recorded for the first time. The enumerators will ask whether the person belongs to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe and what is his caste. According to sources, the questionnaire is likely to record the information stated by the respondent instead of giving any ready list of castes.

The decision to conduct the caste census was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 30, 2025.

Questions ranging from Covid vaccination to bank accounts and mobiles

Among the questions notified by the government, there are also many questions that appear different from the general census at first glance. People will also be asked for information on the place of Covid-19 vaccination, total number of bank accounts, mobile number, Aadhaar number, voter ID, passport number and driving license.

Apart from this, questions related to employment and economic activities will be asked whether the person worked in the last year or not, what is his profession, what industry, trade or service he is associated with and what is the category of his economic activity.

Record of migration and place of birth

The enumerators will also ask people about their birthplace, previous place of residence, reason for migration, duration of stay in the present village or town and permanent residential address. This will help in understanding the picture of internal migration in the country.

Married, widowed, divorced and separated women will also be asked about their number of surviving children, number of children from existing marriages and children born alive in the last one year.

The census will be completely digital.

This census of India will be conducted as a completely digital process. People will also get the option of self-enumeration apart from giving information by going door-to-door. For this, people will be able to fill their information between August 17 and 31.

The enumeration of people in the identified snow-bound areas of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will take place between September 1 and 30. In the rest of the country, this process will take place next year.

The 2021 census was postponed due to Corona

The census, which is held every ten years in the country, was proposed in the year 2021, but it was postponed due to the Corona epidemic. Now the central government has approved a budget of Rs 11,718 crore for the census.

The first phase of the census will go on till September 30, which includes preparation of house lists and enumeration of houses.

With questions related to caste, education, employment, migration, digital literacy and identity, Census 2027 is going to create a very comprehensive database of the changing social and economic picture of the country.
