The FDA's big action on Blinkit: Food license suspended for finding cockroaches, filth and expired goods

The food security situation in Maharashtra continues to be grim. Amid the ongoing strict action against the violation of food safety rules under the leadership of IAS officer Tukaram Munde, there has been a major action on the company associated with Blinkit. The Maharashtra State Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food license of Blink Commerce Pvt. Ltd., Malad, Mumbai with immediate effect till further orders.

The FDA investigation revealed several serious violations of food safety regulations, including unhygienic conditions inside the establishment, a large number of cockroaches, improper storage of food items, expired and tampered packaged food items.

FDA inspection was conducted on August 7.

Food Safety Team of FDA Brihanmumbai Division inspected the establishment of Blink Commerce Private Limited at Malad (West) on 7th August 2026. During the investigation, the officials found several loopholes which are directly related to the safety of food items and health of consumers.

The inspection revealed rusted racks, food items kept on the floor, inadequately cleaned cold storage, haphazard storage and poor sanitation.

Cockroaches in the stock of fruits and vegetables

During the investigation, the most serious situation came to light in the stock of fruits and vegetables. According to officials, a large number of cockroach infestation was found there, posing a serious threat of contamination of food items.

Expired, spoiled and tampered packaged food items were also found in the cold room. Apart from this, adequate arrangements for protection from insects and rats were not found in the areas of storage and handling of food items.

Not complying with FIFO / FEFO regulations.

The FDA inspection revealed non-adherence to the FIFO / FEFO system required to keep food stocks in order. Serious deficiencies were also found in waste management, cleanliness and maintenance.

The officials also did not find necessary documents related to medical examination and health records of the staff handling the food items. Lack of provision of personal hygiene and safety equipment required for the staff was also found.

Licence suspended, business suspended

In view of these serious irregularities, FDA has suspended the Food License of Blink Commerce Private Limited under Section 32 (3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and relevant Food License and Registration Rules with immediate effect till further orders.

During the suspension of the licence, the concerned establishment has been prohibited from selling, distributing food items or operating any kind of food business.

The FDA has made it clear that if food business is found running in the establishment during the period of suspension, then strict action will be taken against the concerned responsible people under the law.

Administration's strong message on food security

It is clear from this action that the Maharashtra FDA is in no mood to tolerate any negligence regarding the quality and hygiene of food items. It is particularly important to crack down on establishments where large quantities of food are stored and distributed.

The FDA's action is being seen as a stern warning against those who play with the health of consumers.
