India's capital Delhi has bagged the infamous first place in the world's top 10 most polluted cities!
Every winter in the Indian capital and its neighbouring region, there is a risk of thick smog due to the cold, dust from the construction of heavy air trap buildings, smoke from vehicles and smoke from stubble burning, leading to many of Delhi's 2 crore residents suffering from respiratory ailments. To deal with this problem, many times schools are closed, some construction work is stopped and private vehicles are banned.
The air quality in India's capital, New Delhi, dropped to dangerous levels on Tuesday, October 21, and remained among the worst in the world. Partly, firecrackers burst during Diwali were also responsible. New Delhi topped the list of cities with the worst air in the world at the time of writing the report, while Kolkata and Mumbai came third and fourth, according to the live ranking by Switzerland-based group IQAir. There are also 2 Pakistani cities in the top 10.
According to the report, the top 10 most polluted cities in the world are:
Delhi, India Lahore, Pakistan Kolkata, India Mumbai, India Tashkent, Uzbekistan Karachi, Pakistan Canberra, Australia Kuwait City, Kuwait Kinshasa, Congo Manila, Philippines. Diwali is grandly celebrated in India. These firecrackers are one of the important factors contributing to air pollution, and every year after the bursting of firecrackers on Diwali, a major decline in air quality is seen. Delhi is unlikely to get any relief in the coming days. The Ministry of Earth Sciences has predicted that the air quality will remain in the "very poor to poor" category with an AQI level between 201 and 400.
