People have been demanding that the sale of liquor be stopped around educational institutions and religious places, but the governments have been avoiding taking drastic steps due to the thousands of crores of revenue generated from liquor.

As many as 61 liquor shops were closed in Chennai, 31 in Kancheepuram and 21 in Madurai. At the same time, former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had also initiated the closure of liquor shops in a phased manner in 2016.
However, the state governments have always been arguing that the trade of illicit liquor could increase if a complete prohibition is implemented, which would endanger the lives of the people. The death of around 60 people in the hooch tragedy during the Stalin government had further aggravated the menace.
