Indian-made car exports hit a record high in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (FY2026)! However, Mexico's tariff hike from 20% to 50% has raised concerns.
Maruti Suzuki exports thousands of cars to Mexico every year, including the Baleno, Swift, Dzire and Brezza. Hyundai also offers cars like Grand i10, Aura, Venue and Creta. Apart from this, cars of Volkswagen Group and Nissan India are also sold in Mexico in good numbers.
Cars made in India are now making a strong mark not only in the country, but all over the world. The demand for made-in-India cars is constantly increasing and its direct impact is seen in the car export data. In the first eight months of the current financial year FY2026, India has set a new record in terms of car exports. During this time, more cars have been sent from India to other countries than before, which has given a big boost to the auto sector.
According to SIAM data, in the first eight months of FY2026, about 5,99,276 passenger vehicles have been sent abroad from India. That is, a direct increase of about 1 lakh units has been seen this time. This clearly shows that Indian cars are becoming increasingly popular in the global market. This year could be the biggest ever record for car exports. A total of 7,70,364 passenger vehicles were exported in FY2025. The special thing is that more than 80,000 cars have been sent abroad in a month for three times this financial year. Data for September, October and November clearly show this strength.
Amid this success, a challenge has also emerged as Mexico's tariffs have raised concerns. Mexico has announced that import duties on cars made in India will be increased from 20 per cent to 50 per cent from January 1, 2026. Mexico is a major export market for India. In FY2024, India sent about 1.94 lakh cars and SUVs to Mexico, which was a large part of the total exports.
